Passionate Educator: Dr. Lorraine Monroe Speaks

Silverdale--“It’s about feeding your brain and heart—it’s not about lunch,” said Dr. Lorraine Monroe at a gathering held September 27 at Klahoywa Secondary School. A fearless and passionate educator for over 30 years, Dr. Monroe was on hand to share her unique talents and perspectives with Central Kitsap students during lunchtime after addressing Central Kitsap staff.

“I believe Dr. Monroe’s knowledge and experience will provide a powerful message as we all strive to insure all children are taught and learn at the highest level,” said Janell Newman, executive director of Curriculum and Instruction “Her message is serious and poignant, yet delivered with passion and humor,” she added.

Dr. Monroe has used the “power of education” to reach her dreams. A former teacher, administrator and trainer and now international lecturer, she was the first principle of the Frederick Douglass Academy in Central Harlem, NY. She always expected her students to succeed. And they did, almost 96 percent from the first graduating class received college acceptances.

She’s never accepted failure—it’s only temporary she exclaims Dr. Monroe speaks of this and her own story as well as her educational philosophy in her book: “Nothing’s Impossible: (Times Books, 1997).
